Europe must now move at jet speed on Accelerate EU plan

By  Brussels,

Brussels 22 April – The European Commission’s Accelerate EU plan is a pragmatic move forward – particularly in improving transparency on fuel stocks and supply, and acknowledging the need for flexibility in existing rules.

This is not a moment for lengthy process – it’s time for swift action, now. The flexibilities already built into EU legislation on anti-tankering, passenger rights, and slots must be activated immediately. Airlines cannot wait, while jet fuel supply recovery will take weeks.

It is notable that the plan stops short of addressing temporary ETS relief, a move that would have aided in maintaining costs for passengers and protecting more vulnerable routes, especially ahead of the peak summer season.

The measures to accelerate investment in SAF and eSAF production echo repeated calls over the past two years for action to rapidly bring down the cost of SAF and transition to a functioning SAF market.

European airlines have proved to be resilient before, adapting in times of turbulence. Exceptional times require exceptional measures – temporary and targeted measures now that can be lifted as soon as stability returns.

We are on day 53 of this crisis, and Europe must move at jet speed to alleviate pressure.
